The electrical system in your home or business has a serviceable lifespan or “Life Expectancy”.
What this means is that like anything else over a period of time they will deteriorate.
- Electrical Cables
- Fuse Boxes
- Light Fittings and other components of an electrical distribution system
It is therefore sometimes necessary to replace all or part of an electrical system.
This is known as a rewire.
Sometimes this deterioration is obvious and sometimes it is not.
It must be said that the deterioration of the electrical system can be potentially dangerous to both persons and property.
If you are unsure as to the condition of or have any concerns as to the safety of your electrical system, you can in the first instance have us undertake an inspection and test of your system.
If a rewire is necessary. It is not the end of the world.
A.Gordon Electrical Services has carried out between 100 and 200 complete rewires in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast over the past 10 years. On each and every occasion we have had a satisfied customer.
Understandably there are a lot of questions concerning a rewire and we will try to answer the most common ones here.
How much will it cost?
We get asked this question most often and usually over the phone.
It is impossible to give you an accurate and binding quotation for a rewire without visiting your property. In fact, this is true for most electrical work undertaken.
There are many factors to consider when undertaking electrical installations and these considerations cannot be verified with a telephone conversation.
Don’t fall into the trap of accepting a telephone quote from a contractor who hasn’t taken the time to visit your property.
Most often this unscrupulous method results in additional cost to that original “estimate” when the work has already begun, with excuses like: We didn’t anticipate… and, you never told us….
A.Gordon Electrical Services will take the time to meet you at your home or business and discuss with you what exactly you require. It is only then that we can agree the specifications that will form the basis of a verbal and subsequent written agreement. In addition, the person who visits you will most likely be one of the electricians who carries out the work – we do not employ salesmen.
How long will it take?
The length of time it takes to complete a rewire is dependent on what your requirements are.
Generally speaking, a 3 to 4 bedroom domestic property takes between 4 and 5 working days to carry out a complete rewire. Less if it is a partial rewire.
We normally commence a rewire on a Monday with the aim to have it completed by the end of Friday. This way you don’t have to live with a partial electrical system over a weekend.
Dont fall into the trap of allowing a contractor to start a rewire without knowing when they anticipate finishing. We have on occasion been asked to complete rewires that have been started by other contractors weeks before, never to be seen again….
Will there be a lot of mess?
Carrying out a rewire means that every electrical cable in your property is replaced with a new one. Every switch, every socket, and every light fitting, if you so wish, will be replaced with a new one.
To carry out this work, we will inevitably need to gain access under your floors. This will involve moving some furniture about during the day to access the space under the floor we need to get to.
We will also require access into the space above your ceilings, usually a loft space.
So the answer to this question is best answered by saying that there will be some need to move things about , but we will always at the end of each day reinstate your property to how we found it when we arrived in the morning.
Customers who have allowed us to rewire their homes whilst they are at work during the day, often tell us they’re house is cleaner when they return home then when they left it in the morning.
We will always agree with you a plan of action so as you are aware as to which area of your property we will be working on at any particular day. This will enable you to move or pack up any items to facilitate their safe relocation for the day.
Will any further work be required once the rewire is complete?
There are some occasions that after a rewire is completed that small chases in the walls will need to be patched up and redecorated.
In well over 90% of our rewires that is NOT the case.
Due to our extensive experience of rewiring properties, we have developed techniques whereby chasing out your walls is the exception rather that the rule.
If we must chase a wall to replace a cable, then that chase is measured precisely and cut out with a specialized cutter. The chase is neat and in no way unsightly. We even try to salvage the strip of wallpaper if present to allow for it to be used for patching back in.
There are contractors who chase out walls with a hammer…seriously.
How can I be sure that the work has been completed correctly and in accordance with regulations?
On completion of our work, we will issue you with an Electrical Installation Certificate in line with current Electrical Wiring Regulations.
We will notify your local authority as to the work that has been carried out in line with Part P of the Building Regulations
Your rewire will be guaranteed by an insurance backed warranty by the NICEIC for SIX years and to the value of £25,000
It’s called the Platinum Promise and details of it can be found here
